In a diverse and interconnected world, acknowledging territory becomes an act of humility, grounding, and relationality. It has become an essential practice to foster respect and understanding of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples.
As an Indigenous professional and person, I've witnessed the powerful impact of a territory acknowledgement, in various settings, from community meetings, corporate functions and other events or activities. This article explores the significance and importance of territory acknowledgements and provides guidelines on how to construct a territory acknowledgement statement.
Understanding Territory Acknowledgements as Cultural Protocol
Territory acknowledgements signify respect for Indigenous peoples who have lived on these lands and continue to do so. While they may sometimes be seen as “corporate signalling,” when done correctly, they demonstrate our ongoing commitment to reconciliation, acknowledging and uplifting Indigenous traditions, and raising awareness about Indigenous histories. Embedding this practice as a personal, organizational, or community protocol reshapes our historical perspectives from a singular narrative to a more inclusive and accurate portrayal.
The transformative approach and impact of territory acknowledgements:
Personal Connection: Share your personal journey of learning about the lands history and your commitment to reconciliation.
History and Context: Research the historical and present day context of the land and the original caretakers of the land. Take the time to learn the proper pronunciation within the traditional languages of those communities.
Cultural Protocol: Do this work with respect, reciprocity and humility. Weaving together, relations, connections and community, through shared purpose and mutual benefit.
Calling-Out Colonial Impacts: Highlight the ongoing impacts on colonization such as displacement, cultural suppression and past injustices while also emphasizing the ongoing strength, resiliency of Indigenous communities
Committing to Action: Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning, relationship building, advocacy and meaningful change.
Territory acknowledgements are a powerful cultural protocol that establishes a share path forward, towards building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities. They signal collaboration and a desire to create more inclusive communities.
I encourage you to reflect on this practice and consider how you can integrate it into your personal, professional, and organizational interactions.
